Queer as Folk UK Recs
Cesare:
The Almost Never series is twenty-six stories that connects
and chart Vince and Stuart's relationship from the time they first meet at
age fourteen to their escape to the US at the end of the series.
We see things above and beyond the show, and it's like getting a direct
link into Stuart's mind, and he tells us what we want to hear.
He loves Vince! He needs Vince! But he's not a lapdog. He's REALLY Stuart!
Wonderful. Some of my favorites from the series are:
Chains--Vince phones Stuart
when he has an encounter with an aggressive shag that has a hard time taking no
for an answer.
Eight Days a Week--A typical week in
the life of Stuart Jones. He works and shags and sleeps and doesn't think about Vince. No, not at all.
Testing--Vince has a scare, and Stuart
tries to deal with the emotions this evokes for him. Also, great continuity here to the great throwaway scene
in the first series where Stuart asks an acquaitance on the street, "How's Peter?" only to have the man reply, "Still dead!"
It also gives Stuart a reason for this malicious little blunder.
Solo--Stuart has to deal with the aftermath of
the Nathan-in-Vince's-room debacle. He visits Romey in the hopes of running into Vince, who he hasn't spoken to in weeks.
Escape Velocity--Stuart and Vince in the car on their way towards
adventure. Stuart finally admits his feelings to Vince, in his typical roundabout way.
Gesture--Mmm...sex between Vince and Stuart in a hotel room on their great
adventure. The very first of her stories that I read.
Sex--Stuart musing on sex with Vince, and how
complaining about how smitten he's become.
48 States--Several great
vignettes about Stuart and Vince's adventures in various American states.
Rhipondon Society: (archived on Internet Wayback Machine)
Abilene--The R.S. version of the
backstory behind why Stuart
has that gun at the end of QaF2. Delicious and satisfying h/c.
Wake--Wake comes right after "Abilene"
in the chronology of the R.S.'s world, and it's also a lovely,
fitting farewell to Douglas Adams that makes me smile.
Secret and Better--My favorite part of their stories is the way
Nathan is portrayed very compassionately. As a matter of fact, Secret and
Better are kind of Nathan/Vince, but they're sweet and comforting, like cocoa
or wrapping a blanket around yourself. Even when it is N/V, we still know
that it's Stuart Vince is meant to be with, and it's ok in the story. Oh,
simply amazing.
Tia:
Eiffel Tower--It always
bothers me that on the show and in fanfic Stuart is a complete bastard to Vince,
but then never has to apologize. Because of that, one of my favorite parts in
the series is when Vince realizes Stuart had sex with Nathan in his old
bedroom and he takes off, Stuart trailing behind him in his Jeep,
begging him to get in the car. Likewise, this is one of my favorite fics,
because we see Stuart genuinely contrite about his mistakes,
and Vince getting some of his own back.

Paddy:
Promises, Promises--So very good, but it made me want to tear my hair out. I kept yelling at the screen "stick up for yourself, Vincent! What would your mother say?" It’s a look at a sexy, naughty Stuart and how much Vince loves him.
Let You Go--This literally has tears streaming down my face every single time I read it. Hazel dies. It's very sad, but also very sweet. Vince drinking sherry in her honor, and stays strong for his family. It makes me want to call my mom and beg her to never, ever leave me.
Stuart’s Women: Sandra--Another good one. It’s a look at the often skimmed-over relations between Stuart and Sandra. I’ve always wondered why Sandra, someone so obviously strong-willed and…sassy, if you will, would keep working for Stuart when he constantly bosses her around. This is a look at their dynamic. The revenge scene between Stuart and Sandra’s ex-boyfriend is also a sight to see. Hysterical!
Mallory Klohn:
I Like It Like That--Mallory Klohn has the
distinction of writing the FUNNIEST fanfic in the whole fandom. This story
puts Vince in the most ridiculous shagging debacles known to man, poor guy.
Her Stuart through Vince’s eyes is also so incredibly sexy that is makes me
blush every time he lowers his eyelashes. Gah. I’ll never look at Vick’s
VapoRub the same way again. At its core, it’s about two fucked up people that
manage to make being fucked up together work.
World’s Biggest World:
Two Sleepy People
I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper
This story is interesting because one, it has Stuart bending over backwards to
seduce and cajole Vince and two, it depicts a Stuart far meaner than the way
most authors choose to portray him. I think that her version is very true to
form. He lacks all tact, and basically says to Vince, “I know that you want
me, so wouldn’t it be nice to finally TAKE for once?” The bathroom scene at
the end of the first part is so hot my brain short-circuited and as such I
had to reread it again and again (heh) to get the true meaning.
Speranza:
Mere Anarchy--This story is written from beginning to end a la
Henry Pinter and Memento, and the characterization is spot on.
Stuart manipulating the police during his interrogation is so hysterical,
as is Vince claiming Stuart is a “pacifist.” Great sex, great dialogue,
great look into Stuart’s mind, all in all. It’s about Stuart sticking up for
Vince in his now patented, reckless way.

A Good Deed
Sometimes You Just Know-A
great teenage story about Stuart and Vince told from Hazel's perspective.
I know how Vince feels about Stuart. I've spent enough time around both of them to know. I've come across Vince's journals, by accident mind you, and the depth of his crush is unending.

Margo:
Good Boy- an AU
off the pilot episode. What if, by some twist of fate, Nathan had ended up in
Vince's bed? Still traces of Vince/Stuart, but a great Nathan voice here.
Nathan lowered his chin, and blushed deeper. He looked up at Vince's face, prepared for a repeat of the derision and dismissal he'd received from Stuart after shooting his load. Instead the amusement in Vince's eyes was softened with understanding, and Nathan gathered his courage and mumbled, "Yeah. But I want to. I do. Really."
Jane St. Clair:
All Of Them Are True-"You're insane, Vince. You're lucky I love you or I'd be forced to let them lock you up. And you're not allowed any more science fiction, ever."
Jessica:
stuart in the land of the daleks-Vince
and Stuart have a fight, and Stuart knows exactly where to find Vince.
Stuart knows exactly where to find him. Vince has never been able to hide, not from his mum, not from Stuart. He managed to lose Alexander at Babylon one night for all of thirty minutes before a search team was organised and Vince's blowjob was interrupted.
Pares:
Oceania
Gunslingers by Maggie the Cat--Stuart and Vince practicing shooting Stuart's newly acquired gun. "You've shot up every bottle we have, Stuart. There's nothing else to kill!" Vince's voice came floating back to him, buoyed on the waves of heat that shimmered in the air.
Never Been Kissed by Lisa--A teenage fic showing Vince's slow sexual realization and his first kiss with Stuart. "I just don't," Vince said. "I mean, you… Well, you've done all sorts, haven't you? I've done nothing. How do you know for sure if you've never done anything? I've never even had a real kiss. What if I kiss some bloke and I don't even like it?"
Nowhere to Run by Em--An amazing post-ep. Shows what happens directly after Vince runs away from Stuart in episode four.
Vince increased his pace. Anger and bitterness dogged his steps as he drew closer to his flat. It was inconceivable that Stuart hadn’t known how his little tryst would affect him. He felt . . . violated. He might not have much of Stuart, but that room embodied most of what he did have. And Stuart felt nothing. It meant nothing to him. In the end, the only thing that mattered to Stuart Alan Jones was sex.
